You’ve probably heard the word purpose thrown around a lot lately. It’s become a bit of a buzzword and it is certainly making the rounds in everything from work environments to personal development forums. If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you’ve come to the right place. We take a look at the concept of purpose and why it is important to have one.
What is purpose?
Purpose is essentially a direction for your life. It is an overarching principle or end goal that you are working towards and is likely to provide your life with meaning. Purpose is usually broader than a single aspiration; it often provides guidance around the way you want to act. For instance, morals and values are a big part of a purpose and will help to drive your behaviour. If you feel lost or aimless, or maybe you just want to live a more meaningful life, a purpose may be what you are looking for.
Why is purpose important?
1) Source of motivation
Your purpose is likely to be the thing that makes you keep going when times get tough. Without being able to see an end goal or the bigger picture, it may be tempting to give up when faced with a challenging obstacle. However, if you know why you need to overcome this obstacle, you are more likely to dig deep and move forward.
2) Provides clarity
A purpose provides direction for your actions, in both what you should do and how you should do it. Given that you will know exactly where you want to get to, it will be clearer what actions you need to take to get there. It will also help you to stay committed to your core values, ensuring that you act in ways you are comfortable with.
3) Gives your life meaning
If you have a purpose, you will no longer wake up wondering what the point is. There will be an overarching aspiration driving your behaviour and choices, meaning you will always have something to work towards. You will no longer feel aimless as you will have an established end goal.
What if I don’t have a purpose?
Some people seem to naturally know their purpose, while others are unsure of their life direction. Spend some time thinking of the things you are passionate about and what you hope to get out of life. This will help you to define your purpose.
