Motivation and fulfillment are two terms thrown around quite regularly in the development and psychology spaces, but what exactly do they mean? And what is the link between the two? We take a look at each of these concepts and explore how the two are connected.
What is motivation?
Motivation comes from the word “motive”. A motive is something we want or desire, so motivation is the drive that comes from wanting or desiring something. It is important to have motivation as it is what drives us to take action, get out of bed in the morning and continue to progress with our lives.
What is fulfillment?
Fulfillment is essentially satisfaction. We often use it about life, i.e. she is fulfilled by her life. This is something that can be achieved when we are content with the things we are doing, what we have achieved, and where our life is headed. Fulfillment leads to us being happy, as we aren’t constantly wanting more or wondering “what if”?
How are they connected?
Motivation is typically driven by purpose. We have things that we want to achieve and we work to do so. We are motivated by these goals and creating change, so continue to work hard in the face of adversity or unexpected challenges.
When we achieve our goals, short-term or long-term, we get a sense of satisfaction. Our hard work has paid off and all the hardship we endured has been worth it. This leads to a sense of fulfillment.
If we can achieve the things that we care about, the things that keep us motivated, this, in turn, leads to contentment. We are happy with our life, the way things have turned out, and the place we have reached.
The tricky thing is maintaining this fulfillment. What happens when we reach our goals? What’s next? What happens when we lose out motivation? Does that mean we can’t be fulfilled? Not necessarily, although as demonstrated there is a direct link between the two. It is in everyone’s best interest to remain focused and motivated so that they can achieve a life of happiness and fulfillment.
Both of these concepts are quite complex and it can take a long time to really understand what they really mean at an individual level. Every person needs to consider these things in terms of their own life if they truly want to achieve a fulfilled life
